Professionalism in Dietetics

Course Description

Capstone course in dietetics covering professional practice guidelines, public policy, healthcare systems and/or policies, reimbursement, and a review of the five subject areas of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and registration exam. Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C- in NTR 282, NTR 313, NTR 413, and NTR 431; Minimum grade of C- in BIO 277 or KIN 292; Corequisite: NTR 460.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  1. Describe the governance of dietetics practice, such as the Scope of Dietetics Practice, Standards of Practice, and Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics

  2. Explain the impact of a public policy position on dietetics practice

  3. Describe the process of obtaining reimbursement for services from public and private insurers

  4. Create a professional resume, personal statement, and ePortfolio for supervised practice application or nutrition related employment.

  5. Demonstrate professional behaviors including reliability, accountability, respect, and strong communication skills.

  6. Identify types of bias and examine how bias can impact patient care.

Attendance is very important in this course as it is a key aspect of professionalism. A professional behavior grade will be given which includes not only being present for class, but also actively participating in our weekly discussions.

Please alert me prior to class if possible if you need to be absent. Student-athletes must make prior arrangements in advance for any conflicts with their schedule and due dates for this course.
