Find Your Way in Nutrition

Course Description

This course will promote cohesiveness among first year Nutrition students and Nutrition faculty, relay information regarding the multiple paths available to and job opportunities for Nutrition graduates, and orient students to and help familiarize them with the department. Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in one of the following Fields of Study (Major): Nutrition; Note: Grade: Pass/Not Pass (P/NP).

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify the Nutrition concentrations at UNCG that support different career goals. Students will have discussions with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Nutrition, the Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics, and the Director of the Dietetic Internship, along with former students.
  • Become familiar with diverse research being conducted by Nutrition faculty and identify opportunities to get involved. Each Nutrition faculty member will speak to the class at various points during the semester.
  • Developing and applying foundational nutritional skills through group projects intended to foster strong peer relationships. Students will be asked to work in groups on Nutrition project(s) that emphasize foundational skills in the field. This may include finding, critically evaluating and discussing a timely Nutrition peer reviewed article; creating “Nutrition Myths” posters to acknowledge common false beliefs within Nutrition; discussing and developing ideas for successful study habits based on the planned progression through the major.

Activity/Performance Measure Percentage/Points
Evaluation for this class will be satisfactory (S) /unsatisfactory (U) and will be based on attendance. To pass with a satisfactory (S) grade, students must have no more than 2 unexcused absences. 100%

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is required for this course and more than 2 unexcused absences will result in an Unsatisfactory grade.
