Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

• recognize and identify works of the period under study presented either aurally or in score;

• name and explain the significance of composers, genres, forms, venues, performers, musical practices, and texts of the period;

• discuss, orally and in writing, the characteristics of musical genres and individual works of the period, using appropriate musical terminology;

• discuss, orally and in writing, the intellectual and cultural contexts for genres and works;

• locate, evaluate, and cite information relevant to a historical question from the period; and

• apply the information in original essays addressing historical and/or critical questions.

Attendance/Participation:

Class participation and attendance percentage is divided in half, with one half consisting of weekly attendance and the other half of evaluation of contributions to the class outside of the required presentations/assignments.
