Syllabus
Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historiography of women in western music history
- Analyze the music of female-identifying composers and place it in its historical context
- Investigate a piece of music in order to answer historical, cultural and musical questions
- Evaluate the intersections of class, race, and gender and their impact on the musical output of female-identifying musicians

Attendance/Participation:
Students are allowed 3 unexcused absences over the course of the semester. Each subsequent absence will result in the lowering of the final grade by 3 percentage points (for example, from 100% to 97%). Frequent tardiness beyond 5 minutes of the start of class will be discussed and may be treated like an unexcused absence.
Written documentation (either paper or email) must be presented for all excused absences, which may include but are not limited to UNCG functions, contagious or severe medical illness (physical or mental), and other extenuating circumstances. If you know you are going to miss class, please communicate with me by email before the missed class, or as soon as possible after the missed class.
