Course Description
History of Western art music traditions from about 1750 to the present. Prerequisite: MUS 135 or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Find, interpret, and evaluate information on diverse cultures;
Describe interconnections among regions of the world;
Use diverse cultural frames of reference and alternative perspectives to analyze issues;
Identify works of the period under study presented either aurally or in score;
Identify and explain the significance of major composers, genres, styles, forms, venues, performers, musical practices, texts, and contexts of the period;
Discuss, orally and in writing, the characteristics of musical genres and individual works of the period, using appropriate musical terminology;
Discuss, orally and in writing, the intellectual and cultural contexts for these genres and works;
Locate, evaluate, and cite information relevant to a historical question from the period; and
Apply the information in original essays addressing historical and/or critical questions.

Attendance/Participation:
Attendance and participation is a core expectation of this course. Therefore, students who earn an attendance grade of 0% cannot earn a passing grade.

J. Peter Burkholder, A History of Western Music, 10th ed. (New York: W.W. Norton, 2019). Students are expected to have access to a computer with a browser and word processor.
