Course Description

History of Western art music traditions from the early Christian era to about 1750. Prerequisite: MUS 135; Notes: Open to all university students.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • recognize and identify works of the period under study presented either aurally or in score;
  • name and explain the significance of major composers, genres, forms, venues, performers, musical practices, and texts of the period;
  • discuss, orally and in writing, the characteristics of musical genres and individual works of the period, using appropriate musical terminology;
  • discuss, orally and in writing, the intellectual and cultural contexts for these genres and works;
  • locate, evaluate, and cite information relevant to a historical question from the period;
  • apply the information in original essays addressing historical and/or critical questions.

Attendance/Participation:

Students are allowed 3 unexcused absences over the course of the semester. Each subsequent unexcused absence may result in the lowering of the final grade by 3 percentage points. Use them wisely. Anyone exciding 8 absences will be dropped from the class.

Please note that showing up to class 15 minutes late will result in an absence as well as constant tardiness to class that are below the 15-minute markers.

Written documentation (either paper or email) must be presented for all excused absences, which may include but are not limited to UNCG functions (including concerts and rehearsals), contagious or severe medical illness with a note from a provider, and other extenuating circumstances with proper documentation.

If you know you are going to miss class, please communicate with YOUR GRADUATE ASSISTANT by email before the missed class, or as soon as possible after the missed class.

If you are experiencing symptoms of an illness (sneezing, coughing, runny nose, etc.) and choose to come to class, please wear a mask to prevent potentially spreading the illness to others. If you have a fever, please do not come to class; if possible, please seek medical care.

Participation (12% total) - Rating | Description:

Excellent (12) | Always prepared, contributes regularly, respectful, engaged.

Good (11-9) | Usually prepared and participates frequently.

Satisfactory (8-6) | Attends regularly but participates occasionally.

Needs Improvement (5-3) | Rarely participates or is often unprepared.

Unsatisfactory (2-1) | Multiple absences; doesn’t participate.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

  • Looseleaf paper, music-staff paper (when indicated), a notebook, or a journal, 3 bluebooks for tests.
