Course Description

The lower division sound studies seminar develops attentive listening skills and examines different sound and perception theories drawn from traditions around the globe. A variety of oral communication skills and methods are developed and practiced.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

MAC Oral Communication Competency (MAC 3)

  • Demonstrate appropriate and ethical oral communication messages for given contexts and communicators to increase knowledge, foster understanding, and/or promote change.
  • Analyze and evaluate messages according to context, audience, intent, and other principles of oral communication, to contribute to the ongoing development of knowledge and relationship.

Music Objectives

  • apply listening skills to a wide variety of sonic contexts.
  • connect examples, facts, or theories from more than one music discipline/field.
  • discuss the musical characteristics sound/music using proper vocabulary.
