Course Description

Introduction to computer/computer applications: word processing, database, spreadsheet, music notation, Internet and online library, Web page and multimedia development. Experience using, creating, and evaluating computer media for music. Prerequisite: Music major

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Build core digital and technological skills for musicians and create a practical portfolio for school and career use.
  • Demonstrate competency with essential music technologies and UNCG systems.
  • Learn fundamentals of music notation, audio recording/editing, and other media tools.
  • Produce a portfolio of artifacts optimized for real-world use such as applications, teaching materials, auditions, and professional websites.
  • Understand and apply MacOS tips, UNCG network access, email, and Canvas usage.
  • Create clean, intermediate-level music scores and export to various formats (PDF, MIDI, audio, etc.).
  • Record and edit audio, understand audio formats (MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC), and assemble basic recording setups.
  • Import and edit multi-source video footage, apply transitions, titles, still images, and external audio; export to common video formats and share appropriately.
  • Build a personal portfolio website.
  • Extend music notation skills to professional-level engraving.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

  • USB flash drive or external hard drive that is 8GB or larger and UNCG OneDrive for cloud backup.
  • Headphones (1/8” / 3.5mm): Bring to the lab for work with audio/video and class videos. Limited check-out available in the lab and the Music Library (2nd floor).
