Graduate Conducting Seminar

Course Description

Graduate seminar for conducting students. Topics include orchestration and instrumental ensemble pedagogy; score study, interpretation, and performance practice; relationship of scholarship to ensemble pedagogy; diction and vocal ensemble pedagogy; repertoire selection; conducting pedagogy; and creation of job materials. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor; Notes: May be repeated for credit.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Student will be able to engage in effective dialogue regarding the artistic, technical, interpretive, scholarly, pedagogical, and administrative aspects of conducting.
  • Students will develop skills in score analysis and interpretation through the application of scholarly research to music of various time periods.
  • Students will develop skills in verbal and written communication about music through the application of scholarly research to music of various time periods.
  • Students will develop skills in ensemble pedagogy and error detection through the application of pedagogical principles to music of various time periods.
