Vocal Coaching

Course Description

Facilitation of progressive development of voice students through advanced and comprehensive study of repertoire and performance practice, focusing primarily on diction, style, and interpretation. Prerequisite: Voice Performance majors, junior or senior standing, and permission of coordinator of vocal area; Corequisite: MUP 351 or MUP 352 or MUP 451 or MUP 452; Notes: May be repeated as often as enrollment space permits.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Acquire an increased understanding of musical style, idiomatic language and diction, collaboration with pianist, stage deportment, storytelling, and developing a unique sense of personal artistry.
  • Show improvement in musicianship: accuracy of rhythm and pitch; understanding of legato, articulations, phrasing, expressive breathing, singing harmonically as well as linearly, and of musical styles.
  • Develop and/or refine the ability to authentically sing in at least the following languages: English, Italian, French, and German.
  • Demonstrate improvement in stage presence, including the use of appropriate facial and body energy.
  • Improve translation and pronunciation skills by writing the IPA and translations in the musical scores for all literature covered in coaching sessions.

Attendance/Participation:

You must notify the instructor at least 24 hours in advance if you will be absent. Absences may or may not be rescheduled depending on the nature of the illness and advance notice of absence; however, if the instructor has to miss a lesson, it will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Do not attend sessions and do formally cancel if you have any illness symptoms. The instructor will try to make up the sessions if notified in advance. In case of an outbreak of virus on campus, the coachings will be moved to Zoom format, and singers will inform the instructor of repertoire plans and provide scans of music if requested.

Communicate absences via both text and email as early as possible. Missing more than one coaching without prior notice will result in your grade being lowered. Two or more coachings missed with or without notice will result in an even lower grade.
