Course Description

Survey of non-operatic solo vocal repertoire: Italian (Baroque and Classical), German, Nationalistic, Spanish. Brief historical study of major composers, poets, compositional style, and historical periods.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Recall the major composers of non-operatic solo vocal repertoire found in the following categories: Italian (Baroque and Classical), German, and Spanish/Latin American.
  • List major cycles and individual songs by the composers studied.
  • Identify general characteristics of and sources that influenced the compositional style of each composer.
  • Identify major poets associated with art song texts in the categories listed in the course description.
  • Analyze specific features of musical examples based on the following characteristics such as text painting, relationship between the piano and vocal lines, harmonic progressions, etc.
  • Develop an appreciation of the aesthetics of each historical period, including related trends in the arts and philosophy.
