Jazz Pedagogy

Course Description

Principles of jazz interpretation, improvisation, and arranging. Procedures of organizing and administering jazz programs. Survey of jazz study materials. Prerequisite: MUP 204.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Instruction of instrumentalists and singers to swing.
  • The ability to direct large and small ensembles.
  • Teaching jazz improvisation to beginners.
  • Recognition and conversations about improvement of gender and racial bias in jazz performance and education.

Directing Community Band 10%

Final Exam 20%

You must pass in your work in person, in class, and on time, or early. If you miss an assignment you have until 7 calendar days to pass it in, at a lower letter grade. One week after the assignment is due, it will not be accepted and will be graded as a zero.
