Fundamentals of Collaborative Piano I

Course Description

Class discussion, study and performance of literature for voice and/or instruments with keyboard accompaniment. Special attention given to sight reading techniques, German Lieder and Italian opera reductions.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Follow the solo line while playing the keyboard part
  • Interpret the keyboard accompaniment as an ingredient of all parts
  • Collaborate with a soloist in achieving a succesful performance
  • Engage in active listening to other musicians
  • Make a recording of the keyboard part for soloist’s practice purposes
  • Have a general knowledge of German art songs
  • Manage the practice time efficiently
  • Improve the speed and accuracy of sight reading
  • Prepare for the first rehearsal with a soloist
  • Have an understanding of realizing the figured bass
  • Recognize discrepancies in piano transcriptions compared to orchestral scores
  • Use wide timbral color range to imitate orchestral instruments
  • Do a word-by-word translation of song texts in foreign languages
