Making Music with Computers

Course Description

Hands-on introduction to using computers to create music. Topics include sequencing, editing, sampling, and looping. Software includes Garage Band, Logic Express, Reason, and Audacity.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Critically analyze claims, arguments, artifacts, or information.

  • Construct coherent, evidence-based arguments.

In MUP 220

  • Demonstrate an understanding of electronic artworks as expressions of cultural values in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, evaluating and reproducing the expressive traditions of computer-assisted music making.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) such as GarageBand, LogicPro, and Ableton.

  • Create original musical works using tools common to this artistic community.

  • Take exams in support of the value of critical inquiry and evidence-based arguments. (SLOs 1 and 2)

Attendance and Participation are a graded component of this Course. Proper attendance is critical for composition projects.
