Beginning Piano

Course Description

Beginning piano performance and music fundamentals for the student with little or no previous music study. Prerequisite: Non-music majors only.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Enrich lives with recreational music-making and music appreciation
  • Apply functional literacy in standard music notation on the grand staff and play the piano with both hands simultaneously.
  • Analyze and synthesize information on simple sight-reading pieces with accuracy of notes, rhythm.
  • Create appropriate simplified accompaniments for folk and popular songs.
  • Demonstrate proper technique appropriate to fundamental repertoire by deciphering, processing, and interpreting notations.

Attendance/Participation:

Regular attendance is vital to your success in learning to play the piano and passing the course. Attendance is taken at each class and is worth 15% of your total grade. If you are tardy, leave early, and/or do not have the proper materials for class, you will receive half credit for that class.
