Performance Studies: Voice

Course Description

Instruction on principal instrument or in voice. Prerequisite: Audition required; Notes: May be repeated for credit if different instrument or with approval of Department Chair; Enrollment for 2–3 credits requires coregistration in an ensemble.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate technical skills requisite for artistic self-expression in performance at a level appropriate for the particular music concentration.
  • Apply an overview understanding of the repertory to performances from a cross-section of that repertory.
  • Demonstrate the ability to sight read with fluency.
  • Demonstrate both general musicianship and a level of skill relevant to professional standards.
  • Develop a practical knowledge of pedagogy at a level appropriate to the degree.
  • Construct artistic/intellectual goals that are evident in their work.

Attendance and Participation (Lessons, Studio Voice Recitals, Repertoire Class, Joint Repertoire Class, Opera performances) 15%

Your semester grade will be based on the following: Evidence of appropriate practice and preparation for weekly lessons Participation in studio repertoire class (performing/translations/pedagogical comments) Participation in the three performance forums (Joint Repertory Class, Studio Voice Recital, required Degree Recitals) Attendance at all required events Jury grades (from the Vocal Handbook) “…the student’s final grade each semester will reflect the grades given by the voice faculty in attendance at the student’s jury. The extent of this influence is the purview of the performance studies teacher.”

Grading Criteria: A You demonstrate superior work in all of the expectations listed above. B You demonstrate good work and satisfactorily meet the expectations listed above. C You demonstrate adequate work and may need improvement in one or more of the expectations listed above. D You demonstrate inadequate work and need improvement in one or more of the expectations listed above. F You demonstrate poor work and need improvement in a number of the expectations listed above.

Attendance and Participation are graded components of this course.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

Students are required to purchase all digital/sheet music presented for performance/evaluation required for performance by the instructor. Plan to buy anthologies and other music each semester. Plan this expense into your textbook budget. Get to know the music library. I strongly encourage you to increase your personal library for your own future as a singer and educator. I will recommend specific anthologies or scores for you to purchase.
