Introduction to Jazz Listening

Course Description

The jazz masters and significant jazz recordings of the 20th century will be introduced; these recordings will range from Louis Armstrong to John Coltrane. Aural recognition will be developed. Prerequisite: Music major

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Become a more active listener, through jazz masters and significant recordings of the 20th century; ranging from Louis Armstrong to John Coltrane
  • Assess jazz music's elements by direct active listening: this is aural recognition
  • Describe a piece of music in verbal or written form, demonstrating aural recognition

Listening Quizzes 10%
Final Exam 20%

You must pass in your work in person, in class, and on time, or early. If you miss an assignment you have until 7 calendar days to pass it in, at a lower letter grade. One week after the assignment is due, it will not be accepted and will be graded as a zero. More than two unexcused absences will amount to a lower grade, at the distraction of the instructor.
