Course Description
Intensive, field-based internship in school music education. Includes practical applications of previous course work in supervised settings. Taught as Speaking Intensive Course. Prerequisite: MUE 461 or MUE 464 or MUE 467; senior standing; passed advanced piano proficiency (MEDU major, choral/general concentration only); admission to the professional semester for student teaching; Corequisite: MUE 466

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Complete 16 weeks of intensive, full-time field work in a school placement with a designated cooperating teacher. This includes the daily schedule, assigned supervision duties, and after school or weekend activities required of teachers and school districts.
Follow all applicable laws, policies, procedures, and guidelines designated by the state of North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, UNCG, UNCG Teacher Education, and UNCG Music Education.
Complete a minimum of four observations and four post-observation conferences with your University Supervisor using the TCE document for all observations and adding the CDAP 2.0 and COTC documents for the final observation.
Complete and submit the edTPA portfolio, which is required for graduation, and a recommendation for a teaching license cannot be given without it.
Complete the Praxis Music exam (5114) and submit those scores to the Undergraduate Coordinator for Music Education. This exam is required for graduation, and a recommendation for a teaching license cannot be given without it.

The final grade for student teaching is the sole responsibility of the University Supervisor. The University Supervisor, in consultation with the OSTE, determines the final grade. The following areas are considered when determining observation grades and the final grade: planning, instruction, assessment, student motivation and management, teacher impact, professional growth and contributions, and dispositions. The University Supervisor will use the TCE, CDAP, and COTC documents to determine the final grade and will complete these documents in Sonia (sonia.uncg.edu). The course engages diverse scholarly perspectives to develop critical thinking, analysis, and debate. Inclusion of a reading or activity does not imply endorsement.

Attendance/Participation:
All student teachers are expected to complete sixteen weeks of student teaching. Student teachers are to equate the student teaching experience with that of a full-time teaching job. Five (5) or more absences for any reason may result in withdrawal from student teaching assignment and the course. Any absences may be made up with the approval of the OSTE and the University Supervisor to gain maximum experience from the student teaching opportunity. Any absences beyond the fourth absence must be made up to meet established guidelines. Student teachers are expected to be early to all school functions.
