General Music in Elementary Schools

Course Description

Instructional methods and approaches to promote P-5 learners' musical understanding. Includes supervised teaching practicum. Content in reading education, cultural diversity, and exceptional learners will be explored in detail. Prerequisite: MUE 261; admission to the Teacher Education Program; junior or senior standing or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Deepen understanding of how social, psychological, physical, developmental, and cultural factors affect how elementary-aged students learn.

  • Continue building on skills to plan and execute developmentally appropriate and meaningful elementary general music learning experiences.

  • Develop appropriate and meaningful strategies to assess elementary general music students’ learning

  • Facilitate individual continuous professional growth as a music educator.

  • Further demonstrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions corresponding to the standards outlined by the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and Participation are graded components of this course. Students must attend class each day and miss no more than three scheduled classes during the semester. All students' final grade will be penalized at a rate of +/- per absence upon a fourth absence.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

Students must have access to a digital device for video recording, a soprano recorder, an acoustic ukulele (soprano, concert, or tenor) and the following textbook:
