Film Theory

Course Description

Study of the principal theories of film through the writings of critics, theorists, and directors. Prerequisite: MST 225 or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the major schools and theorists in film theory and their historical development.
  • Apply multiple theoretical frameworks to analyze narrative, style, ideology, spectatorship, and cinematic meaning.
  • Compare and evaluate differing theoretical approaches and explain how each produces distinct interpretations of the same film.
  • Produce original scholarly film analyses that integrate theoretical concepts, close textual analysis, and academic research.
