Editing I

Course Description

Development of practical editing skills in pacing, shot selection, and the workflow necessary for delivery. Prerequisite: MST 271; Media Studies major or minor; or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competency with post-production software and equipment.
  • Achieve basic understanding of post-production workflow.
  • Introduce various elements such as color grading, compositing, sound design, and sound mixing.
  • Further develop your stylistic voice as a filmmaker/artist.
  • Build critical creative experience working in post-production.

Attendance/Participation:

The expectation is that students attend class, be on time and be prepared for class. The class meets once a week, therefore 1 absence may occur during the term without penalty. After the 1st absence, a 5-point deduction (5% of the cumulative grade) per absence is the penalty.

Professionalism is required. Assigned work is BY OR BEFORE THE SPECIFIED TIME AND DATE. A letter grade will be dropped for every day that the work is late.

If you have a situation that results in extended absence, please contact the instructor to make arrangements.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

  • Portable Hard Drive(s). A minimum of 1 portable hard drive is required. (Two portable drives are recommended, one for editing & one for protected storage of original media files). The editing drive is required & must have USB 3 connectivity.
  • Headphones (over the ear, NOT earbuds if possible—it makes a big difference). You (and all other students) are expected to use headphones when working in the Carmichael Computer Lab.
