Course Description

Principles and practice of cinematography. Application of the equipment and accessories used in cinematography through practical projects. Prerequisite: MST 271.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Proficiently operate cinema and HDSLR cameras.
  • Achieve an in-depth understanding of current imaging technology in order to follow and explore future advancements of cinematography.
  • Develop a visual style with thoughtful use of visual elements such as composition, focus, color, lighting and movement.
  • Build critical creative experience in working as a cinematographer and member of a camera department.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is mandatory – please be on time. Students may be allowed two unexcused absences. Their grade will be lowered by ONE LETTER GRADE upon the 3rd absence. Upon the 4th absence, students will receive a failing grade.

Three tardies of 5 minutes or more will be treated as one unexcused absence. Students should inform me (1) as soon as they know of any planned absences, and (2) immediately if they have a family or [documented] medical emergency. They should familiarize themselves with any material covered during their absence.

Assigned work is due at the beginning of class. A letter grade will be deducted for each day the work is late. In the real world, late work constitutes the loss of a job and pay!

Collaboration is unavoidable in this course. Students are expected to be respectful and professional. Lack of participation (in-class, on Canvas), as well as poor conduct, attitude, and behavior, will result in a lower grade and possible removal from class.

  • Shot Designer (by Hollywood Camera Work) Paid Version - $20 (available on iOS/Android, Mac/PC)
  • USB Flash Drive
  • External Hard Drive (at least 1TB, two drives are recommended, one for editing & one for protected storage, USB 3 connectivity or better, formatted ExFAT or MAC OS Extended [journaled])
  • USB-C to USB-A cable or adapter, if not included
  • Memory Cards - SD (at least 64GB, R/W up to 170/80MB/s)
  • Leather Work Gloves (Heat-Resistant)
