Introduction to Media Production

Course Description

Introduction to techniques of media production with emphasis on video capture and editing. Prerequisite: Media Studies major or minor.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Properly operate media production and post-production equipment.
  • Demonstrate basic competence in acquiring and editing moving image and sound media.
  • Apply technical principles to execute a concept with a desired aesthetic.
  • Develop a solid theoretical, aesthetic, and technical understanding of film style.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is mandatory – please be on time. Students may be allowed two unexcused absences. Their grade will be lowered by ONE LETTER GRADE upon the 3rd absence. Upon the 4th absence, students will receive a failing grade.

Three tardies of 5 minutes or more will be treated as one unexcused absence. Students should inform me (1) as soon as they know of any planned absences, and (2) immediately if they have a family or [documented] medical emergency. They should familiarize themselves with any material covered during their absence.

Assigned work is due at the beginning of class. A letter grade will be deducted for each day the work is late. In the real world, late work constitutes the loss of a job and pay!

Collaboration is unavoidable in this course. Students are expected to be respectful. Professionalism is required! Attitude is everything. Lack of participation (in-class, on Canvas), as well as poor conduct, attitude, and behavior, will result in a lower grade and possible removal from class.

  • External Hard Drive (preferably 1TB, solid-state drive)
  • Over-the-Ear Headphones
  • Leather Work Gloves (Heat-Resistant)
