Introduction to International Business

Course Description

Introduction to the environmental factors which increasingly cause businesses to become international in the scope of their activities. Nature of global business and multinational organizations analyzed. Prerequisite: Junior standing; and restricted to students who are Pre admitted to or admitted to majors in the Business School (PACC, ACCT, PBAD, BADM, CARS, PCYB, PCYM, CYBE, CYMA, ECON, PECO, ECOS, PENT, ENTR, PFIN, FINC, PHTM, HTMT, PHUR, HURM, PINT, INTB, PISC, ISSC, PMKT, or MKTG).

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Explain the economic, political/legal, and cultural differences among countries that influence international operations;

  • Be aware of the increasing international business activities, the reasons and global institutions behind this trend, and the different regional agreements around the world;

  • Recognize the implications of trade theory and the global monetary system with the different exchange rate systems and apply these theories to current international issues.

  • Identify the different entry modes that a company can utilize in entering a foreign market and practice applying when each mode of entry should be used;

  • Be aware of the impact of internationalization on company strategies and on various functional areas within a corporation.

  • Identify where to find country information and critically assess such information in preparing a country analysis that integrates the above lessons learned throughout the semester.

REQUIRED: International Business: The Challenges of Globalization, 10th edition. Published by: Pearson (ISBN-13: e-book: 9780137653379)

Feel free to order the 9th edition. The 10th and the 9th editions cover exactly the same list of topics. The 10th edition contains updated statistics and new cases and examples and a separated chapter covering this and Corporate Social responsibility programs, but as far as the core concepts, the changes are minimal. So for the latest information get the 10th edition, but if you want to save money, 9th edition will suffice.

However, please note you CANNOT use the global edition of this book.
