Study in English of selected topics in literature or film linking multiple periods, language areas, and cultural traditions represented in LLC; includes guest seminars by department and visiting experts. Note: May be repeated three times for credit.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Understand the cultural, artistic and intellectual exchanges among the continents during the 20th century
- Explain key historical events affecting 20th-century societies by conducting rigorous research
- Analyze the role of literature and the arts in social and cultural initiatives and debates
- Identify characteristics of the main artistic and literary movements of the 20th century
- Explain the contributions of major authors, artists and film directors
- Analyze relationships and exchanges among literature, painting, music, and film
- Write clear and organized critical analyses of cultural, literary and audiovisual texts

Attendance/Participation:
Attendance and participation are essential to pass this class. There cannot be no more than two absences, and students must provide a written justification for each absence and communicate in advance with the instructor.
Students cannot turn in assignments late, since they will not be counted.
Since students must engage in class discussions and present orally their main points of their written assignments each week, those who are absent without justification may not get a grade for that week’s assignment.
Corrections or rewrites have to be done for the following week; no exceptions, otherwise considerable points will be taken off.
Again, engagement in discussions and group work is required, for this reason, departures from class will be counted as absences or tardies.
If you need accommodation, such as needing to use the bathroom during discussions, you must process it via the OARS Office in advance.
