Course Description
Cataloging and classification of materials using current cataloging codes and appropriate techniques of subject analysis and classification. Prerequisite: LIS 640 or permission of instructor.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Understand foundational cataloging principles, including:
- The historical context of current principles
- Authority control
- Subject and classification structures and schemes
- Data standards
- Conceptual models for library data and metadata
- Identify major trends and organizations in the cataloging profession
- Create consistent, high-quality catalog records using appropriate standards for bibliographic description, authority control, subject analysis, and encoding
- Assess the quality of catalog records based on their adherence to appropriate standards
