Materials for Children

Course Description

Survey of resources for early childhood through elementary school levels, study of selection aids and criteria, use of resources, and investigation of reading, listening, viewing interests.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Articulate an understanding of a wide range and varied types of materials to the specific needs, interests, and abilities of children. This will include the defining characteristics of each genre of literature for children and the fundamentals of storytelling.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the audiences for children’s resources in relation to their informational, cultural, recreational needs, and their social and cognitive development.
  • Promote and advocate for materials according to users’ needs (intellectual, emotional, social and physical). This will include the ability to access internet resources for literature-related information.
  • Identify and discuss issues related to censorship of materials for children. Be aware of appropriate procedures and assistance sources for handling censorship attempts in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of professional resources for children. This will include recognizing the criteria for selecting and evaluating the different kinds of library materials for children.
  • Design activities to promote children’s enjoyment of reading and individual selection criteria.
  • Understand, design, and promote materials to support informational needs of parents, teachers, and caregivers. Be able to build and maintain a balanced library collection of children's books and books for adults on choosing and sharing books with children.

Attendance/Participation:

Students are expected to actively participate in class by contributing to discussions, engaging in collaborative activities, and coming prepared to share ideas and respond thoughtfully to classmates.
