Management and Professional Issues in Athletic Training

Course Description

The administration and organization of athletic training health care programs and facilities. Current issues in athletic training professional conduct and practice will also be discussed. Prerequisite: Admission to MSAT degree program or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Describe the responsibilities and roles of athletic trainers within the broader healthcare system, including the delivery and referral of services, regulatory influences, and professional conduct.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic and business plans for athletic training programs, focusing on organizational needs, improvement, budgeting, and effective management.

  • Demonstrate understanding and application of personnel management principles, including recruitment, selection, hiring, contracting, and evaluation of employees, physicians, and healthcare personnel.

  • Design and manage safe, efficient clinical practice settings by creating risk management plans, ensuring compliance with privacy, security, infection control, and maintaining comprehensive medical records using contemporary management systems.

  • Analyze and apply legal, regulatory, and financial concepts—including credentialing, insurance models, billing procedures, and professional standards—to athletic training practice, and demonstrate professional skills through the development of career materials and educational content.
