Physiology of Sport and Physical Activity Laboratory

Course Description

Laboratory supporting KIN 375. Corequisite: KIN 375.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • To express the basic terminology utilized in exercise physiology.
  • To demonstrate proficiency with equipment that assesses aerobic and anaerobic capacities.
  • To demonstrate competency in the measurement of oxygen consumption, ventilation measures, muscle strength and body composition.
  • Students will be able to recognize and write lab reports for exercise physiology a sub-discipline of kinesiology.
  • Students will be able to submit a second draft (in the first write-up) and utilize appropriate feedback from lab instructors to work toward mastery of writing scientific laboratory reports.

Course Grading Information:

Activity/Performance Measure Percentage/Points
Lab reports 60%
Practical exam 20%
Participation 10%
Pre-lab quizzes 10%

The lab grade counts for 25% of the overall course grade. A student must earn a grade of at least 70% in order to make a C or higher in the overall course.

Attendance/Participation:

Attending labs is a mandatory requirement to pass the course. Only special circumstances approved by the instructor will be considered as an excused absence; however, the lab that was missed must be made up.

An unexcused absence will result in a loss of 5 percentage points from your total lab grade for the semester (regardless of the point value of that week’s lab). Missing more than one lab will lower the overall grade by an additional ten percentage points (i.e., one letter grade) for each lab missed.

If a student is late by less than 10 minutes, they will receive a 10% reduction for that day’s lab assignment. If they are late by more than 10 minutes they will receive a 50% reduction. If a student leaves early from a lab without permission, it will be considered as an absence.

Students are expected to participate fully in lab, including being on time, reading material beforehand (these are important since time is limited) and participating as a subject. Failure to dress properly (athletic wear including shorts, athletic top, and footwear) for lab will result in a 5% reduction in the participation points.

Furthermore, the inability to correctly perform measurements due to artificial nails, piercings, or other aesthetic enhancements is unacceptable and will result in a deduction of points for that session and/or exam. Exceptions to the above can be made for cultural dress, physical disabilities, etc. Students should notify their lab instructor of potential exceptions as soon as possible. The instructor may ask for verification from an appropriate source (OARS, Dean of Students Office, etc.).
