Database Management and Cloud Systems

Course Description

Study of database management systems with a focus on both traditional and cloud-based database design, implementation, query and use. Includes an extensive case study requiring the development of a database system for organizational needs. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in ISM 110.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Design and implement relational databases and retrieve data effectively.
  • Use SQL to create complex queries, generate reports and administer a database.
  • Explain various types of NoSQL databases, such as document stores, key-value stores, columnar stores, and graph databases.
  • Explain the comparative advantage of using cloud-based databases and how it is combined with big data technologies.

The total score will be rounded up; For example, if your total is 89.2%, your letter grade will be B+.

Attendance/Participation:

No makeup or rescheduled assignments and exams: Makeup or rescheduled assignments, quizzes, and exams are not permitted if a student misses them. The only exceptions are documented emergencies, such as serious medical situations or the loss of an immediate family member. In such cases, students must provide appropriate documentation and notify the instructor before the deadline whenever possible.

No late submissions: Late submissions are not accepted. However, in cases of documented emergencies (e.g., medical emergencies or natural disasters—not personal reasons), late work may be considered at the instructor’s discretion and will incur a minimum 20% penalty. Students are responsible for notifying the instructor as soon as possible (preferably in advance) of any circumstances that may affect their ability to meet a deadline.

Group project participation: Group projects are collaborative efforts, and all members are expected to contribute actively and communicate effectively. Students who fail to participate, do not complete their share of the work, submit work late, or demonstrate a lack of cooperation (e.g., poor communication) may be identified as free riders. Final project grades will be adjusted based on peer evaluations. All peer evaluation submissions will remain anonymous.
