Survey of design forms evolved in response to humankind's needs for community, architecture, furnishings, and artifacts, with development from prehistoric to modern eras in cultural, political, and technological contexts.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Recognize stylistic and material characteristics across a range of eras and regions.
- Explain the philosophical, cultural, and social foundations of historic design movements.
- Analyze how political, environmental, and technological forces shape interior environments.
- Compare global approaches to dwelling, ritual, representation, and meaning-making.
- Use a precise visual and critical vocabulary in discussion, drawing, and writing.
- Treat design history as a dynamic, sensory, and ethical field of inquiry.

- Examine global and intercultural perspectives through the study of design forms, interiors, furnishings, and artifacts in cultural, political, environmental, and technological contexts.

The Final Project category includes four milestones within its 40%: proposal (5%), outline or storyboard (5%), peer-review draft (5%), and final submission (25%).

Attendance/Participation:
Attendance and participation affect the final grade through the Quick Writes category, worth 15% of the course grade. A Quick Write is assigned during each class meeting and is available only during that class session. Students must submit it in Canvas by 11:59 p.m. on the same day. Quick Writes cannot be submitted late or made up after an absence because they document in-class observation, interpretation, and participation. Attendance does not carry a separate point deduction beyond the Quick Writes category.
