Course Description

Varying topics in the creation and development of American culture including the role of technology, environment, ethnic diversity, and the history of ideas. Notes: May be repeated once for credit when topic varies.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify an appropriate research topic and pertinent primary and secondary sources.
  • Critically analyze primary sources within their historical context.
  • Evaluate historiographical debates within an historical field.
  • Undertake original historical research by collecting and interpreting historical documents and framing creative analytical questions to drive their research.
  • Use evidence-based reasoning to interpret the past coherently while developing and presenting an original argument, orally and in writing.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is required for this class and will be recorded each meeting. There are no excused or unexcused absences (no doctor's notes please). Each student may miss up to 3 classes with no grade penalty. These unpenalized absences are meant to cover all emergencies and illnesses. Each absence in excess of 3 will reduce your participation grade by 15 points. Students are responsible for completing on time all work assigned (or due) on days when they are absent.
