Course Description

Examination of witchcraft beliefs and persecution as a way of studying the social history of Europe before industrialization. Emphasizes the "Witch Craze" of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Learn to approach primary sources critically and effectively, scrutinizing the document’s historical context, intended audience, and purpose

  • Learn how to identify and critique arguments in secondary sources

  • Articulate plausible arguments of your own, based on evidence from various sources (primary, secondary, artwork, etc.)

  • Develop critical thinking and communication skills through reading, writing, and discussion assignments
