Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is expected at all 42 class meetings. We allow you three free absences for any reason whatsoever (you don’t even need to tell us why). After that point, every missed class (up to 10) reduces the Attendance grade by 5 points (out of 100). So, if you miss four classes (of which 3 are excused) you earn 95% (95/100=A) for attendance. For example, missing 6 classes (3 excused) gives you an 85% (B) for attendance, missing 8 classes earns you 75% (C) for attendance, and missing 9 classes gives you a 70% (C-) for attendance, and so forth. If you miss 10 or more classes (including the three freebies), however, you fail the class. Exceptions to this policy include religious holidays, certain student activities (sports, drama), and serious illness; if one of these situations arises, you must talk to me about it.
