Course Description

Selected topics in American history at an introductory level. Topics may vary from colonial era through the twentieth century. This course stresses the analysis and interpretation of primary sources.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Use a historical approach to analyze and contextualize primary and secondary sources representing divergent perspectives.

  • Use evidence to interpret the past coherently, orally and/or in writing.

  • Analyze written texts to understand how they relate to particular audiences, purposes, and contexts as a way to inform one’s own writing and/or revision.

  • Create and revise written texts for particular audiences, purposes, and contexts.

  • Through oral or written reflection, demonstrate awareness of one’s writing choices as well as how one’s own writing contributes to ongoing conversations.

Attendance/Participation:

Participation is graded through online Discussions and Quizzes in the student's final grade for this course.

Assignments:

This course is a fully online, asynchronous course. All lectures, readings, and assignments can be accessed through the Canvas site using your UNCG login. If you have any trouble accessing Canvas or any of the readings/assignments, email the instructor as soon as possible. Students are expected to read all assigned readings and complete all assignments for the course.

- Perusall Posts: (GHP 1, 2; MWC 1, 2, 3)
Students will write one question or response to the primary source for the week. Students must highlight ONE sentence to respond to. Students may not say the same question or response as another student.

- Quizzes (GHP 1, 2; MWC 1)

Students will answer a series of questions based on the readings, lectures, and primary source material from each unit.

- Historical Analysis Paper: (GHP 1, 2; MWC 1, 2, 3)

The Paper for this course will be based on primary sources from the course material. There will be a first draft and a final paper. More information will be posted to Canvas.

Late Policy:

Late assignments will be accepted until December 4th. When an assignment is turned in late, there will be a 5-point deduction from the grade on the first day late and 1-point deduction every additional day late. I encourage everyone to turn all assignments in, even if they are late!
