Covers the main themes of U.S. History from before European contact through 1877.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
This course meets UNCG’s Minerva Academic Curriculum Learning Goal Civics & Community, which helps students acquire a working knowledge of documents and ideas related to the founding and development of American democracy in wider social, historical, economic, or rhetorical contexts. Students also gain experience in critical thinking and inquiry, evaluating the quality of evidence and forming judgments about evidence, arguments, and conclusions of others.
The Civics & Community Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
- Critically analyze claims, arguments, artifacts or information.
- Construct coherent, evidence-based arguments.
- Evaluate key concepts, principles, arguments, and contexts in founding documents of the American republic, including the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and a representative selection of the Federalist Papers; and,
- Evaluate key milestones in progress and challenges in the effort to form a more perfect Union, including the arguments and contexts surrounding the Gettysburg Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Letter from Birmingham Jail, as well as other texts that reflect the breadth of American experiences.

Unless otherwise indicated, you will submit all assignments via the class Canvas site by 11:59pm on the due date given.
You are expected to rely solely on lectures and course materials to complete class assignments. References to outside materials, even from other UNCG courses, in course assignments will not earn credit.
Deadlines are firm. Barring exceptional circumstances, I will only accept late work with a firm 5% penalty for every day it is late. That includes any part of the day, i.e.,12:07am, 8 minutes after the deadline, is a day late. I will only accept late work without a point penalty if you have communicated the circumstance beforehand and received approval from me to submit tardy work.
