Quantitative Methods

Course Description

Introduction to statistical concepts and descriptive and inferential statistics. Applied course with a focus on accessing public data sets, interpreting published results, using statistical software, and disseminating health information. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.P.H. program or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define core statistical concepts in descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies, percentages, and proportions) and inferential statistics (e.g., hypothesis testing)
  • Explain the use of quantitative methods in public health (e.g., surveillance, causality/etiology, and evaluation) to identify determinants of health and health inequities
  • Apply appropriate quantitative methods to respond to specific research/evaluation questions using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics
  • Analyze quantitative data using statistics
  • Interpret results of quantitative data analysis for public health research
  • Describe audience-appropriate communication strategies for research results

Attendance/Participation:

This class will be held in-person with occasional online session. For in-person classes, attendance will be collected to factor into the course grade. Student will participate in in-class via class discussions, problem solving activities. Attendance and in-class participation will be worth 10% of the final grade. Missed class will result in point loss for the attendance and in-class participation weighted category. Each class will be worth 100 points where attendance and/or participation will be recorded.
