Epidemiology

Course Description

Study of the distribution and determinants of disease occurrence with emphasis on application to health education. Prerequisite: Public Health Education major or minor; or permission of instructor; Corequisite: MAT 115 or STA 108 or higher-level MAT or STA course.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define epidemiology and understand its role in public health.
  • Define basic epidemiologic concepts.
  • Calculate and distinguish various measures of disease occurrence.
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the five major epidemiologic study designs.
  • Appraise published epidemiologic studies.
  • Distinguish between behaviors that foster and those that hinder wellbeing.
  • Infer needs for public health intervention based on obtained data.
