Course Description
Focus on biological concepts and biomedical terms associated with public health disease conditions. Emphasis on etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, risk factors, and their impact on prevention and control. Prerequisite: Public Health Education major; HEA 213 or concurrent enrollment in HEA 213 or BIO 271 or BIO 277 or KIN 291 or KIN 292 or equivalent; or permission of instructor.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Explain, using biological concepts and biomedical terms, the underlying processes of public health diseases. (Comprehension)
Describe infectious and chronic diseases in terms of etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, risk/susceptibility factors, prevention, and control from a public health perspective. (Analysis)
Summarize current research related to public health disease conditions. (Evaluation)
Identify appropriate strategies and new trends for disease prevention and control. (Synthesis)
Communicate effectively to educate diverse audiences about public health diseases and their prevention strategies, using appropriate terminology and concepts. (Application)

Attendance/Participation:
In-person. Attendance and engagement are worth 20 points, about 7% of the final grade. Attendance is taken at each of the in-person class sessions.
Your first three absences are forgiven automatically, with no documentation required; beyond three, each additional absence lowers your participation and engagement score by one point.
Tardiness is taken into account: the first late arrival carries no penalty, a second brings a warning, and a third or more results in a one-point deduction from the student's total.
