Course Description

Conceptual and methodological perspectives of multidisciplinary study in the field of human development and family studies. Required of all first-year master's and doctoral students.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Describe teaching and research interests, educational backgrounds, and research and applied contributions of HDFS department graduate faculty to the field.

  • Understand the connections between the teaching, research, and service roles of faculty in the field of human development and family studies.

  • Identify the multiple disciplines represented in the field of human development and family studies.

  • Understand the diversity of conceptual views and research methods used in the multi-disciplinary study of individuals and families.

  • Identify connections between teaching, research, and application in the field of human development and family studies.

  • Understand professional expectations, academic integrity and ethical best practices.

  • Access resources to support their use of APA Style Guidelines for professional writing.

  • Access resources related to the policies and procedures of the UNCG Graduate School and of the graduate programs of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

  • Select an advisor and an advisory committee in the graduate program.

  • Develop a plan of study for their graduate program.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is expected. Your participation during our class period will enhance the class experience not only for yourself, but for your classmates as well. It is likely that if you are confused about a point, so is one of your classmates. You are encouraged to ask questions, make comments, and request clarification as needed. Attendance is also required at HDFS Research Colloquium during the term enrolled in HDFS 640. Active participation is expected at colloquium sessions. Points are docked for arriving late.
