Course Description

Examination of parenting behaviors from infancy through young adulthood across family, context, and culture. Explores how political, social, and cultural systems shape parenting choices, options, and experiences.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of theories and research relevant to parenting behaviors, parent-child relationships, and child development.

  • Discuss cultural influences on parenting behavior.

  • Describe how parents’ development and life experiences impact parenting behaviors over the life course.

  • Explain the impact of culturally diverse parenting behaviors on child development.

  • Question the source(s) of their own beliefs and values regarding parenting as derived from personal history and cultural background.

Attendance/Participation:

This course will be online and asynchronous, meaning there are no scheduled meetings ever required. Participation will take the form of completing the assigned materials weekly. Within the course Canvas site, you will access the learning materials and syllabus, submit assignments, take Exams, and participate in online Reflection Assignments. Any questions regarding the course can be sent through Canvas message or email. Alternatively, office hours will be on Teams unless otherwise specified and will occur from 2-3 pm on Mondays. If this time does not work, appointments can always be made to find a time.
