An examination of development from conception through middle childhood across family, context, and culture. Explores variability in individual development and factors related to health and well-being.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the interaction between biological and environmental factors that influence children’s academic, emotional, mental, social, and physical health trajectories.

  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural variability in families of young children and its implications for children’s academic, emotional, mental, social, and physical health outcomes.

  • Integrate information about child development from the textbook, research articles, lectures, videos, social media and/or Reflection Assignments.

  • Apply information from this class to future experiences including parenting, teaching, and professional occupations serving families and children.

Attendance/Participation:

This course will be online and asynchronous, meaning there are no scheduled meetings ever required. Participation will take the form of completing the assigned materials weekly. Within the course Canvas site, you will access the learning materials and syllabus, submit assignments, take Content Quizzes, and participate in online Reflection Assignments. Any questions regarding the course can be sent through Canvas message or email. Alternatively, office hours will be on Teams unless otherwise specified and will occur from 2-3 pm on Wednesdays. If this time does not work, appointments can always be made to find time.
