Human Development Across the Life Span

Course Description

Study of how development unfolds in diverse contexts and cultures from conception to death and how individual characteristics, relationships, and social settings influence cognitive, social, and psychological development. Notes: Students may not receive credit for both HDF 111 and PSY 250.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define key terms related to the study of human development over the lifespan.

  • Describe how human development occurs within the contexts of the family, schools, neighborhoods, socio-economic status, race/ethnicity, and society.

  • Relate lifespan human development as it is described within empirical literature with concrete examples from everyday life.

  • Distinguish between the physical, cognitive, and social aspects of lifespan development.

  • Illustrate understanding of key ideas of lifespan development as presented by main theorists in the field.

Attendance/Participation:

Students are expected to be present and on time for all class meetings in this course. Graded work submitted during class meetings cannot be made up. Attendance will be taken during each class meeting via In Class Assignments (ICAs). A missed class meeting or a class meeting in which the student arrives more than 20 minutes late or leaves more than 20 minutes early will be counted as an absence. Each absence counts as a missing ICA. A maximum of two (2) missed ICAs will be permitted. Each additional missed ICA will be counted as a 0 towards students’ final grades. Student-athletes must make prior arrangements in advance for any conflicts with their schedule and due dates for this course.
