Research Trends in Geography

Course Description

Overview of major research themes in geography. Student will meet faculty and other professional geographers, facilitating the development of research through field experience, colloquia, and conferences. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate program in geography; Notes: Grade: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U).

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate the teaching, research, and professional activities of GES faculty through participation in faculty presentations and departmental events.
  • Engage professionally with the academic and broader geographic community by attending departmental, campus, and student organization events that support professional development and networking.
  • Demonstrate awareness of current research, emerging issues, and professional practices in geography, environment, and sustainability through participation in departmental colloquia.
  • Critically reflect on scholarly presentations and discussions by connecting ideas presented in colloquia and professional events to their own academic and professional interests.
  • Develop professional networking skills through interactions with faculty, students, researchers, and practitioners at departmental events and professional conferences.
  • Recognize the role of professional organizations and conferences in advancing scholarships, career development, and professional engagement within geography, environmental studies, GIS, and related fields.
  • Apply principles of professional engagement and lifelong learning by actively participating in conferences, workshops, and other opportunities that contribute to their academic and career development.
