Medical/Clinical Genetics and Genomics II

Course Description

Advanced study of topics for genetic counseling students such as mitochondrial conditions and pharmacogenomics as well as genetic conditions by body systems such as visual, auditory, craniofacial, reproductive, circulatory, nephrology and pulmonology. Prerequisite: GEN 630.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Become familiar with pediatric and adult-onset features of genetic disorders for a variety of body systems.

  • Understand the implications of early diagnosis of genetic conditions.

  • Describe the advantages, limitations, and dangers of testing for genetic disease.

  • Illustrate diagnosis and natural history of a variety of genetic disorders.

  • Understand basic principles of pharmacogenetics and the impact on clinical medicine.

  • Understand principles of cancer genetics and cancer risk assessment.
