Principles of Genetic Counseling III

Course Description

Issues in professional development, public policy and health care systems. Introduction to legal issues in genetic counseling. Skill development including advanced genetic counseling skills, case management and preparing educational programs. Prerequisite: Matriculation to third semester of MS genetic counseling program.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Synthesize, organize and summarize pertinent medical and genetic information for case presentation and analysis;

  • Recognize scope of practice within the healthcare system, and legal responsibilities in the provision of clinical genetic services;

  • Develop educational programs including lecture outlines, slides and handouts for community and professional audiences;

  • Effectively tailor education to meet client needs for a range of genetic, genomic, and healthcare topics;

  • Describe the potential impact of transference and countertransference on the genetic counseling process;

  • Employ advanced counseling skills to provide short-term, client-centered counseling and support in genetic counseling settings across service delivery models;

  • Identify counseling responses for addressing client resistance and other client affective states or style differences that impact genetic counseling;

  • Describe methods and characteristics of client-centered decision-making;

  • Identify and apply skills that facilitate the process of giving bad news to clients;

  • Describe the major health care delivery systems in the United States;

  • Describe elements of medical reimbursement including ICD-9 and CPT codes;

  • Identify resources and methods for professional development and support;
