Data Visualization

Course Description

Students in this class will become familiar with the storage and retrieval of data (e.g., different formats and data types in addition to security, assessing public repositories, etc…). In addition, students will become familiar with the various techniques of presenting and summarizing basic and complex data sets. Prerequisite: ERM 410.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Design effective data visualizations to enhance comprehension of findings and insights.
  • Find and select appropriate data that can be used to create a visualization that answers a particular research question.
  • Handle data and data visualizations in a manner that demonstrated an understanding of ethical considerations surrounding data (including data storage, citation, and protection).
  • Properly document and organize data and visualizations to prepare them for reuse.
  • Effectively communicate insights about the data in various formats, including oral presentations, written reports, and interactive visualizations.
  • Apply data visualization best practices to your work, including choosing the right chart type for the situation and avoiding visualization techniques that mislead the audience.

Attendance/Participation:

You are expected and required to be attend in-person each scheduled class meeting, to be on time and to be prepared. You will be evaluated on your attendance, tardiness, and individual participation in class discussions discussion boards.
