Social Entrepreneurship

Course Description

Introduction to social entrepreneurship including identification of social problems and how they are solved through innovation, community impact, sustainability, ethical, scalable, economic value creation, and risk-taking efforts. Note: Students who have prior credit for BUS 340 may not take ENT 340 for credit.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define social entrepreneurship.

  • Identify, recognize, and evaluate social enterprises.

  • Describe the pivotal experiences of social entrepreneurs.

  • Discuss and analyze leadership practices used in social ventures.

  • Discuss the impact of social entrepreneurship from a global perspective.

  • Create and develop socially responsible practices (ventures) for use in for-profit, governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGO’S).

  • Articulate a personal position on relevant social issues and best practices for addressing these issues.

  • Developed a course blog on social entrepreneurship.

  • Worked successfully in a team of diverse personalities, being provided with the opportunity to examine, critique, support, complicate, and innovate the personal positions of each member of the team on important social issues.

  • Reflected upon and described the cutting edge, real-life lessons learned from contemporary social entrepreneurs about the use of innovation and entrepreneurial practice for social good.

  • Created a project examining issues of social entrepreneurship.

  • Used evaluation methods related to social responsibility, sustainability, and successful venture creation.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is required in ENT 340, as active participation in class discussions, activities, assignments, and assessments is an essential component of the course. Students who are unable to attend class due to a documented medical or legal circumstance must provide appropriate documentation to the instructor for consideration in accordance with course and university policies. Failure to attend class may negatively affect a student’s participation grade, in-class assignment grades, and grades for tests or other assessments administered during the missed class period.
