Course Description
Provides a setting in which music students will study principles, practices, instruments, repertoire, and current professional activities related to the historically informed performance of Western music of earlier ages, centering on the Baroque and Classical eras.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Verbally articulate concepts of historical performance practice related to phrasing, articulation, affect, rhetorical delivery, rubato, tempo, rhythm, tone color, and technique, as applicable in Baroque and Classical repertoire.
Recognize performances that are grounded in historical practice, differentiate them from those that are not, and describe the differences.
Utilize historical instrumental or vocal performance techniques that incorporate performance practices of the applicable period.
Perceive information embedded in historical notation that does not reflect the assumptions of modern notation and respond with historically based performance choices.
Identify ways in which historical instruments differ from their modern counterparts, perceive the nature of the resulting sonic behavior, and connect these characteristics with the performance practices studied.
Situate historical performance within the current and future professional activity culture in the US and abroad.

Attendance/Participation:
Attendance and participation are graded components of this class. Students are expected to attend all classes. Excused absences are given in accordance with UNCG’s Religious Observance policy or at the discretion of the instructor.
Course Materials Purchased by the Students:
Students are required to purchase all digital/sheet music presented for performance/evaluation, and any equipment or accessories required for performance by the instructor. Photocopies of copyrighted material are not allowed.
