Jazz Ensemble I

Course Description

Performance of literature encompassing all of the jazz idioms with emphasis on contemporary composition. Prerequisite: Membership by audition; Notes: May be repeated for credit.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • The rehearsal and performance of classic and current literature for large jazz ensemble.
  • To lead sectionals
  • Blend well while playing with a section or full ensemble, through correct use of dynamics, articulations, rhythm and intonation
  • Learning tunes and riffs by ear and improvising over a given tune
  • Though it is not mandatory, students will be strongly encouraged to improvise during the course of the semester.

Attendance/Participation:

Students’ attendance will be dropped by one letter grade for every unexcused absence.

Three times being late to class will add up to a lowered letter grade.
